The 2007 Southeast Asian Games and the Millennium Celebrations
- No one is really expecting The Philippines to win the over-all championship, but wow, the Thais are really underestimating us. If Suravudh's statement is to be believed, he expects the Thais to finish 1st (which they WILL do), followed by Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia.
- Not only that, they're also underestimating us in Athletics (which was our biggest gold mine in 2005). Let's remind ourselves that we won NINE golds in athletics, and as far as I know, all of our gold medallists will be back to defend their titles. I'm finding it hard to believe that they're expecting Burma and Indonesia to be their biggest rivals.
- I actually think that they're underestimating their gold medal haul. I'm predicting that Thailand will get at least 170 golds (as compared to the 150 that they're predicting). Interestingly, they're only predicting 10 golds in boxing. I'm thinking that Thailand will get a lion's share of the 17 golds up for grabs in boxing.
- I haven't finished making my personal predictions, but as of now, I'm sticking with this Top 5: Thailand (170 golds), followed by Malaysia (80 golds), Philippines (70 golds), Vietnam (65 golds) and Singapore (50 golds).
- I have to say that the SEA Games website is a bit disappointing. I hope they improve it in time for the Games. The official website two years ago also had lots of room for improvement, but as it is, it's still much better than the one they have now.
- I really hope we'll have good and LIVE coverage this year from NBN.
- Finally, has the POC released our official list of athletes? I still don't know who's officially competing.

In a report last night from GMA-7's Frontpage, GMA7 execs and stars hosted the "No.1 Na Tayo, Kapuso!" party for the press and advertising people in a bid to lure investors and other people into the network with GMA7's own "claim to fame".
It can be remembered that only a number GMA7 programs reached the top spots in the primetime ratings charts in the history of the Rainbow Network this 2004: these are Imbestigador and StarStruck. It was two years since GMA-7 launched an offensive to snatch away the overall No. 1 Philippine TV network spot from ABS-CBN (still called the Star Network), but only had its 2 shows out of the top 10 primetime slots currently. ABS-CBN is still clinging on to a vast Metro Manila audience share of 40-50% (in contrast to GMA-7's Metro Manila audience share of 20-35%), and a massive regional share of 70-90%. It's a stark contrast with what happened to ABS-CBN after EDSA Uno, where it took less than 2 years to go back to the overall No. 1 spot for the Philippines' most watched TV network (having its 10 shows in the top 10 primetime slots), which it had since 1953-1972 and 1986-2004. And ABS-CBN still has the strong trust of majority of advertisers, being the No. 1 network for the whole of 2003.
Claims are virtually ridiculous, malicious and baseless with regards to ABS-CBN conniving with 2 of the world's most trusted TV ratings groups--AGB and AC Nielsen, and with regards to the moving of channels of both ABS-CBN and GMA-7 by some cable operators, who were falsely accused of conniving with ABS-CBN execs, as various reports by the Philippine Star declared so.
While GMA-7 heavily has its Kapuso campaign since October 27, 2002, ABS-CBN still has the Kapamilya campaign, which has been with the network since January 1, 2000. The Kapamilya campaign of ABS-CBN was first done in coinciding ABS-CBN's two grand events: the network's Philippine Independence Centennial party at Expo Filipino in June 1998, and the nationwide and worldwide multimedia year-end broadcast "The ABS-CBN Worldwide Celebration of the New Millennium" last December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000.
On January 1, 2008, ABS-CBN draws the biggest metropolitan and nationwide audience welcoming Year 2008, eighth year of the third millennium by popular belief, with a special live marathon worldwide broadcast THE GRAND ABS-CBN WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM. The network's top-rating broadcast includes 4 network-sponsored dusk-to-dawn millennium parties at Rizal Park, The Fort, Quezon Memorial Circle and Alabang Town Center and live coverage of millennium midnight celebrations all over Metro Manila, across the Philippines and around the world.
After the ABS-CBN Countdown to 2008 special entitled "ABS-CBN Worldwide Celebration of The New Millennium", a plug called the "Millennium Overture", aired at 12:00 m.n. on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. The first scene featured all the past logos and station ID's (along with the Sarimanok) of ABS-CBN on television screens that were used during the same time the logos were released, (with the TV models getting newer by the time a newer logo of ABS-CBN is seen). Later, a portal transports the viewers to a dark clear space, and displays the 1986 ABS-CBN logo for one last time. Then, all of a sudden, the 1986 logo begins to shift its parts and transform them, starting its reconstruction into a new logo. The box is given a new dimension and is transformed into a new crystal plane, the rings and line modify their appearance, and the ABS and CBN names start to merge and morph into a newer ABS-CBN text with a more modern typography. As the 1986 logo reconstructs, the 2000 logo of ABS-CBN becomes visible, and as the reconstruction finishes, the new logo appears along with spotlights and fireworks (with the line and text still appearing in white), with the dark space becoming a black background with RGB light streams, and the slogan "In The Service Of The Filipino", now in Rotis Semi Serif font, appearing below a white line, which is seen between the logo and the slogan.

Random Thoughts
As the shooting competition drew to a close today, and with 3 days to go before the formal Opening Ceremony, here are some of my random thoughts about the SEA Games so far:
As the shooting competition drew to a close today, and with 3 days to go before the formal Opening Ceremony, here are some of my random thoughts about the SEA Games so far:
- No matter how you view it, our shooting team was a disappointment. They will come home with 3 silvers and 1 bronze, a far cry from the 3 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronzes won 2 years ago. I initially thought that we would maintain a 3 gold haul, but it wasn't meant to be. I believe that this would be our worst record in shooting in the SEA Games ever (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think our shooting team has ever emerged gold-less in any previous SEAG).
- I have to give it up to the Thais. Shooting is an objective sport (along with sports like swimming and athletics) where winning is counted by points, and not by any subjective standard. While there may be accusations of cheating in subjective sports (boxing, ahem), the Thais won 14 golds in shooting (four more than their target) and you really have to respect their preparation for this.
- I'm actually finding myself rooting for Thailand if we can't win the gold ourselves. It's a foregone conclusion that they will win the over-all championship, and I would rather that we lose the golds to them, rather than to Malaysia or Vietnam (who are our main competitors for 2nd place).
- Despite our poor performance in shooting, I'm maintaining my prediction that the Philippines would end up in 3rd place overall, behind Thailand (1st), and Malaysia (2nd), with Vietnam (4th) and Singapore (5th) rounding out the Top 5. I'm still praying that we get 2nd place though.
- I agree with the other PEXers here that the SEA Games official website focuses too much on the performance of the Thai athletes, and the grammar is terrible! Couldn't they get a better translator?
- Sana ok ang coverage ng NBN... Sana ok ang coverage ng NBN.. Sana ok ang coverage ng NBN..
- I'm hoping that we'll see a bright young Filipino star to emerge this year (much like Sheila Mae Perez 2 years ago).

GMA7's Excessive Pride Should Be Stopped

New ABS-CBN logo was unveiled on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. |
Throughout the usage of the 1986 logo, ABS-CBN had not only enjoyed success in broadcasting, but also rapidly transformed itself into a multimedia conglomerate. So, in 1999, ABS-CBN made a corporate decision to redesign its logo to meet the current demands and to respond with the then fast approaching new millennium. However, ABS-CBN also decided to retain its symbol (as the network noticed that the symbol had become one of the most recognizable and identifiable in the country), and give it a total redesign.
It took a few months to design the new logo, which was developed in-house until finally, on January 1, 2008, with the dawn of the new millennium, the new logo was unveiled. The logo, in extreme contrast to the previous logo, is considerably more "modern-styled". The reason for the retaining of its famous symbol despite the new design, according to ABS-CBN, was because changing its logo for the new millennium was a matter of "keeping the basics" which meant keeping its now historic symbol.
The previous logo, which featured the stylized Malayan letters and a box with three concentric circles and a line gave way to this logo's styling. Foremost, the three RGB circles and black vertical line were retained. Also, the text was given the biggest redesign, as it was modified to a more modern Rotis-like typeface and the box, which was part of the logo since 1967, was replaced with a flat grey/white crystal plane (on the 2D version, the plane appears as a 2D grey square, and on some uses of the logo, the square is nowhere to be seen).
The logo greatly departs itself from the previous logo not only in terms of design but also in terms of representation, because compared to the previous logo, which limited its representation of ABS-CBN as only a radio-TV network and the largest media network in the country, the 2000 logo changed its representation of ABS-CBN from being just a radio and television broadcasting network into a unified representation of ABS-CBN being a multi-media conglomerate. This type of representation would soon be passed on to ABS-CBN's 2013 logo.
A new slogan was launched to coincide with the new logo's unveiling, entitled "Out Of The Box...Into The New Millennium" (the slogan also used to celebrate the new millennium). The reason for the unveiling of the "Out of the Box" slogan, is to represent that ABS-CBN (because of its transformation from a radio-TV network to a total media conglomerate) and its logo (because it has replaced its box with a crystal plane) have indeed, gone "out of the box".
Along with this, the company also launched new theme music to replace the theme music used since the network's relaunch as The Star Network. In 2003, during the television station's 50th anniversary, ABS-CBN launched its present brand name, "Kapamilya" (literally means "a member of the family").
Although the 2000 logo of ABS-CBN is interpreted as a new logo, it can also be interpreted as a new millennium redesign of ABS-CBN's previous logo.
This logo will be completely discontinued on December 31, 2013, and will be replaced by the new 2013 logo on the following day (a similar thing done by this logo when it replaced the 1986 logo of ABS-CBN), or in some cases, might be still used, this time as a secondary logo.

ABS-CBN's station ID for the new millennium was unveiled on January 1, 2008. |
But, the millennium celebrations celebrated nationwide and worldwide, The Ayala party eclipsed that at Rizal Park even with its crowd of 300,000 led by President Pascual and his family and his Cabinet.
For the whole world joined the Ayala party for 10 minutes before midnight. It was seen live by 800 million viewers around the globe through 57 television networks comprising the BBC-led global millennium broadcast. The world saw an estimated 30,000 frolicking Filipinos, a lot of local color in the array of jeepneys parked in front of the Peninsula Hotel in Makati City with its waterfalls cascading down twin stairways lined by the very Filipino parols, all-white and old-fashioned.
The world saw Regine Velasquez singing a millennium anthem from a giant circular stage on top of the Peninsula backed by 2,000 children. When the song ended, the crowd stood in silence as television host Mike Enriquez led a prayer.
It was a world-class production marked by fireworks display every 15 minutes at the four corners of Ayala Center.
When the clock hit 12 on the official millennium Swatch clock beside the stage, the hushed crowd suddenly burst into jubilant singing, shouting and dancing. Confetti rained down on Ayala and more fireworks enthralled.

When the clock hit 12 on the official millennium Swatch clock beside the stage, the hushed crowd suddenly burst into jubilant singing, shouting and dancing. Confetti rained down on Ayala and more fireworks enthralled.
The Ayala celebration started with a big bang when close to a hundred boys and girls entered the giant stage carrying torches. They were dressed in gold and silver. They were joined by the Madrigal Singers. Then, without introduction, pop icon Gary Valenciano ran toward the stage to perform.
The stage vibrated with excitement as giant laser beams projected from behind the stage all the way to the sky.
Aside from Valenciano, it was Kuh Ledesma who mesmerized the crowd with her singing of ''Ako ay Pilipino.''
This was followed by other entertainment numbers by the Apo Hiking Society, Janno Gibbs, KC Montero, Ara Mina, Dingdong Dantes, Vernie Varga, Billy Crawford, Side A, Jaya, Sunshine Cruz, Angelica, Lanie Misalucha, Regine and Kakay Velasquez, among others.
The show was hosted by Miss Universe Miriam Quiambao, television host Paolo Bediones, image model Ryan Agoncillo, Antonette Taus, among others.
On stage were Vice President Noli de Castro, the Zobels, the Binays, and Makati's 400.
Other well-heeled people, who had checked in at Makati's five-star hotels, chose to watch the celebration from their rooms. Still, others greeted the millennium inside hotel lobbies. The Manila Peninsula hosted a millennium party attended by people dressed in their most formal attire.
Changing the look of one of most identifiable corporate symbols in the country was a matter of keeping the basics. ABS-CBN's corporate logo retains the vertical line representing the transmitter tower, signifying the network's core business of broadcasting. The three rings which used to stand only for the Philippines' three major islands clusters, now again new meaning as they now represent the network's presence in the lives of Filipinos elsewhere in the world.
The original black square frame symbolizing balance and stability assumes an added dimension through its transformation to a crystal plane, denoting the network's continued dynamism and synergistic ventures as cinema, recording and E-commerce.
The typography of the network's call letters has likewise been updated to a modified Rotis typeface for a simple, modern and contemporary look attuned to the new millennium. Finally, the fusion of the network's call letters into a single line symbolizes the company's unified vision and graphically, ABS-CBN's bottom line of being In the Service of the Filipino wherever he may be.

Network has new logo
As announced by network chair Eugenio Lopez III during ABS-CBN's Millennium Day Broadcast, ABS-CBN now has a new corporate logo. After making the first steps 46 years ago toward a Philippine Television Industry, ABS-CBN has diversified into other entertainment and information-related ventures, and its products and content are now available to Filipinos in many parts of the world. Indeed, ABS-CBN has gone, so to speak out of the box.Changing the look of one of most identifiable corporate symbols in the country was a matter of keeping the basics.
