About Lifestyle Network

Lifestyle Network is the flagship lifestyle, news and general entertainment television network owned by the Philippine Government and Lifestyle sectors through People's Television Network, Inc. (PTNI) and co-operated by Hong Kong's Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) (50%), Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inc. (25%), PhilSTAR Daily, Inc. (25%) and One Mega Group, Inc. (25%) since June 1987, the publisher of Lifestyle Asia and Mega magazines. Its head office, studios and transmitter are located at TVB Broadcast Complex, Bay City, Pasay City. It is served as the official television broadcaster of the Philippine Lifestyle Journalism.

Lifestyle Network Milestones

On November 19, 1967, First wireless commercial television in Hong Kong and in the Philippines. ABS-CBN TV-27 Manila (DZXL-TV Channel 27) was starts broadcast, with the Jade Network Programming on daytime and Pearl Network Programming on evening hours, with Chinese and English Hong Kong TV Guide for Hong Kong TV Stations published in the South China Morning Post, Manila Daily Bulletin showing the Time (__:__) and program title in Traditional Chinese and English.

TVB commenced broadcasting on 19 November with live coverage of the Macau Grand Prix.

On the same day, November 20, Balita Ngayon, the first national early-evening news broadcast in Filipino was launched and The World Tonight, the national late-night news broadcast in English was debuted.

Mga Balita Ngayon first aired at 7:00 P.M. from November 19, 1967 to January 5, 1975, then moved to 6:40pm and 8:45pm, 6:40pm in 5 minutes and 8:45pm in 25 minutes (national news) plus 5-minute national weather forecast at 9:20pm. On April 3, 1978, was cancelled at 6:40pm, the news moved back to the 7:00pm, while the local news aired at 5:30pm.

On July 21, 1969, Broadcast man's first landing on the moon via satellite.

On August 2, 1970, NBC Nightly News, the America’s early-evening national news program was first aired worldwide on the Jade Network at 6:30 A.M.

On June 18, 1972, for the first time the use of electronic news gathering equipment, TVB reported Hong Kong's Tsui Ping Road landslide.

On 1972, All TVB programmes on Jade and Pearl networks produced and transmitted in full colour.

On October 1974, Renamed on-air as “Government Television” (GTV Channel 27) under National Media Production Center (NMPC).

The PBA signed a contract with Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) to cover its games for over a million pesos.

On April 9, 1975 the PBA opened with its inaugural double-header at the Araneta Coliseum. With a sellout crowd of 18,000 watching, the Marisawa-Noritake Porcelainmakers defeated Concepcion Carrier, 101-98, in the opening game while Toyota won over U/Tex, 105-101, in the main game. Gregorio “Joy” Dionisio of Concepcion scores the very first basket in PBA history.

On July 1, 1976, the digital time contains hours and minutes were debuted on TV screens during the show.

On December 31, 1979, TVB Jade Network on Daytime launches Saksi: GMA Headline Balita, as a 15-minute afternoon weekday Filipino newscast from 1:00 p.m.

On February 1, 1980, it was renamed as “Maharlika Broadcasting System” (MBS TV-27).

On December 5, 1981, MBS TV-4 was the official network of the 1981 Southeast Asian Games.
In 1982, all of HK-TVB's regional stations were networked using INSAT 1A and a national feed called National Programme was introduced. Later that year, Delhi played host to Asian Games which were covered by the channel. To increase the channel's reach, the government launched a program to set up low and high-power television transmitters that would pick-up the satellite distributed signals and re-transmit them to surrounding areas.

By 1983, television signals were available to 28% of the Philippine population. Fueled by the success of the channel's commercialization and increased revenue from advertising, the channel's reach and popularity continued to grow and in 1990, the channel reached more than 90% of the Indian population.

On January 1984, HK-TVB Limited was publicly listed. Television Broadcasts Limited was one of its subsidiary companies (5 January).

On February 25, 1986, MBS became Lifestyle Network TV-27. Llita Logarta became first network station manager.

On 28 February 1986, after the Revolution, Geny Lopez returned to the country after self-exile in the United States and started rebuilding from what was left of the station. Recovery was difficult and resources were low, hence, former ABS-CBN employee Freddie M. García was brought in to rework the station's programming. By 1988, The Lifestyle Network had regained its foothold in Philippine TV ratings.

On March 7, 1987, TV Patrol was premiered to 6:30pm, while the TVB Pearl programming from 3:00 pm to 10:30pm on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays while the PBA Games aired on Tuesdays and Thursdays followed a public affairs program at 10:30 to 11:30pm and followed by The World Tonight at 11:30pm. Co-anchoring the newscast were Noli de Castro, a radio announcer for DZMM, Mel Tiangco and Robert Arevalo, both final anchors of Balita Ngayon. Now as the country’s longest-running news program. 

On November 1988, HK-TVB Limited restructured. Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) became an independently listed company and moved to ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Broadcast Center complex in Bohol Avenue, Quezon City.

On December 1, 1988, the program was moved to 7:15pm to 7:55pm, Saturday & Sunday newscasts as “Saturday TV Patrol” and “Sunday TV Patrol”, moved to 6:00pm and 9:00pm, 6:00pm in 15 minutes and 9:00pm in 30 minutes. On October 6, 1990, was cancelled on Saturday & Sunday at 6:00pm, the news moved back to the 7:15pm. On August 10, 1992, was moved back to the 7:10pm to 7:35pm. In May 31, 1993, the show was moved to 7:00pm to 7:30pm, while the local news aired at 5:30pm before the national newscast at 6:30pm. In September 18, 1995, the show was moved back to the 6:30pm to 7:00pm, and now present.

In 1991, TVB Pearl began to broadcast in NICAM, a digital audio modulation system that provides a facility for stereo or bilingual or trilingual audio transmission. (For the digital counterpart, multiple AC-3 streams are transmitted for the same purpose.) With a compatible television, the viewer can receive audio in their choice of language; typically, English and Cantonese. Chinese subtitles are available on most programmes after 5:20pm.

In 1989, it launched nationwide domestic satellite programming and Lifestyle Network expanded into Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka via the TVB Pearl pan-regional feed broadcast from the Philippines in 1991.

Also worth mentioning is that beginning in March 3, 1991, TVB Pearl's presentation package became the same as TVB Jade's, albeit with some variations.

On March 26, 1992, President Corazon C. Aquino signed Republic Act 7306 turning Lifestyle Network into a private corporation known formally as Lifestyle Broadcasting Network, Inc.

Shortly after he took over the mantle of government in June 30, 1992, President Fidel V. Ramos appointed Lifestyle Network's first board of directors.  The Network was given a one-time equity funding for capital outlay.  Since 1992, The Lifestyle Network has been operating on revenues it generates on its own.  RA 7306 stipulates that the government and business sectors shall not appropriate funds for the operations of the Network.

The Lifestyle Network is on a full satellite transmission nationwide since 1992 using PALAPA C2.  Its flag station Lifestyle Network TV-27, which is based in Pasay City, boasts of a 60-kilowatt brand-new transmitter sitting on a 500-ft tower. With its 18 provincial stations across the country, the Network has extended its reach and coverage to approximately 85 percent of the television viewing public nationwide.

As provided for in its charter, LBNI is mandated to give its viewers a balanced mix of news, public affairs, educational, cultural and sports programs and overseas-made TV series and films. 

On November 19, 1992, TVB celebrated its Silver Jubilee.

On May 2, 1994, an ident for the network set of four, shown during different seasons, were produced. This one lasted until October 18, 1997.

On March 8, 1995, the World Tonight moved to 9:45 to 10:30pm, while Philippine Lotto Draw was premiered at 9:30pm on the same day.

On March 11, 1995, The Weekend News was premiered as late-night weekend newscast at 12 midnight or 1am after Studio Nine-Fourty-Five. The anchors of the said were Erwin Tulfo, Rocky Ignacio and Mandy Navasero on Saturdays and Anton San Diego, Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Mons Romulo-Tantoco on Sunday, while Tulfo replaced by Joseph Parafina on April 22, 2006 on Saturday edition, while Buddy Orebas and Saleema Refran joined Prieto-Valdes and Romulo-Tantoco in July 2006 for the Sunday edition.

In 1998, Widescreen programming was introduced on digital platforms.

On November 15, 1998, Digital terrestrial television launches in the Philippines, broadcasting on British Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial mode.

On October 30, 2000, the network, along with PCOO, PLDT MyDSL and PAGASA-DOST launches PAGASA Interactive Weather or PAG-ASA I-Weather, the 30-minute interactive weather forecast aired live from 5:30 to 6:00 a.m. and lasted until June 22, 2003.

On October 1, 2001, Kape’t Pandesal, the 15-minute reflections for the day produced by Jesuit Communications, was premiered.

On June 23, 2003, a week after the launch of Inquirer Lifestyle Fitness Fashion with Samsung, Panahon.TV was premiered on the network and aired at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays. This is co-produced by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration PAGASA, together with Lina Group of Companies' communication arm, UBE Media, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), PLDT MyDSL and Air21.

The TVB City in SM Bay City officially opened on October 12, 2003 and was constructed at a cost of HK$$2.2 billion. It was designed to cope with future development and expansion, especially for digital television production. 

On October 13, 2003, Pulso: Aksyon Balita is the first Filipino language-late night newscast of the network was premiered, with Karmina Constantino and Tony Velasquez as anchors.

On May 10 to 11, 2004 the network airs the marathon coverage Halalan 2004, which lasted from 7:00 a.m. of May 10, 2004 to 4:00 a.m. of May 12, 2004. The media coverage of the Philippine national elections that sees the win of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as president, Noli de Castro as vice president.

On August 13 to 29, 2004, the network airs the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. TVB paid the IOC $793 million (adjusted by inflation: $963,866,631) for U.S. broadcast rights, the most paid by any country. TVB broadcast over 1200 hours of coverage during the games, triple what was broadcast in the U.S. four years earlier.

On November 27 to December 5, 2005, the network airs the 2005 Southeast Asian Games held in the same city.

On October 14, 2006, a new ident was produced by TVB, and featured ribbons and curves in the three colours of the station- Red, Green, and Blue, pulsating about on the screen. Another secondary slogan was used by the network was "PTV: Ang Network Para sa Pilipino" with the station ID contains the statues of heroes including Ninoy Aquino then after that, the jingle goes: "Peee-Teee-Veee! Ang Network Para sa Pilipinooo!"

Part of its five-year expansion program for the network was started, the live coverage of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar and followed by the mid-term elections of May 2007, also known as "Halalan 2007: Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo!"

Two days ago, on October 16, 2006, ABS-CBN Headlines was premiered, with Tony Velasquez and Pia Hontiveros as main anchors.

Two months later, in December 2006, the 15th Asian Games coverage was aired for 15 days.  The Doha Games will have over 120 hours of live coverage on the said station. This coverage starts before the opening ceremony on 1 December with preliminary rounds in Football and Basketball on 28 and 30 November and will end on 15 December.

The Network will broadcast 46 hours including 36 hours live, covering the traditional Olympic sports Athletics, Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Rowing, Canoeing and Table Tennis, plus Football.

Another channel was launched by the said network was TVB News, the new 24-hour English cable television news, public affairs and sports channel launched in May 2005 and already available across 48 countries, will transmit 150 hours including 86 hours live, focusing on the Olympic team sports Basketball, Volleyball, Handball and Field Hockey as well as Football and Snooker
.

The Asian Games are the first step on the road to the 2008 Olympic Games. Further major events in TVB’s Sports division build-up to Beijing 2008 include the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne in March 2007, the World Athletics Championships in Osaka in August 2007 and the Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand in December 2007.

ABS-CBN covers the days of the Senate impeachment trial of President Arroyo via the top-rating marathon coverage On Trial: A Nation in Crisis with ABS-CBN anchor Tina Monzon Palma and ANC anchor Katrina Legarda, plus legal experts including Atty. Francis Escudero. ABS-CBN airs the Christmas special A Christmas Prayer, in relation to the country's present crises.

On January 1, ABS-CBN airs Countdown to 2007: The Weekend News Special Edition with anchor Erwin Tulfo featuring New Year events in Metro Manila.

On January 2 to 20, 2007, HK-TVB covers the final days of the President Arroyo impeachment trial via On Trial: A Nation in Crisis, and the reprisal of the EDSA Revolution that unseats Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as president and makes Karen Lourdes "Tito Keren" Pascual the new president via the top-rating marathon broadcast EDSA Dos.

On May 14 to 16, 2007, ABS-CBN covers the Philippine national elections that sees the win of BBC World News anchor Rico Hizon as senator and the senatorial candidates sponsored by President Pascual via the marathon coverage Halalan 2007.

Part of the five-year expansion program (2007-2011), it's five-year contract with the UAAP, the network agreed in principle and signed a memorandum of agreement giving the broadcasting network the right to air the league's games for another five-year period with Season 70, is set to open with colorful rites on July 7, 2007 at the Araneta Coliseum, in Quezon City.

On July 15, ABS-CBN covers the Siege of Malacanang and the Mendiola Riots, days before the State of the Nation Address, as it becomes victim to the rage of supporters of former President Arroyo wanting to unseat President Pascual, with 7 million pesos worth of damaged equipment and property.

On December 6 to 15, 2007, ABS-CBN covers the Philippines playing for the 24th Southeast Asian Games, as the games are held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

On December 31, 2007, at 7:00:00 pm, TVB launched the official start of digital terrestrial broadcasting services.

On December 31, 2007 to January 1, 2008, ABS-CBN draws the biggest metropolitan and nationwide audience welcoming Year 2008, eighth year of the third millennium by popular belief, with a special live marathon worldwide broadcast THE GRAND ABS-CBN WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM. The network's top-rating broadcast includes 4 network-sponsored dusk-to-dawn millennium parties at Rizal Park, The Fort, Quezon Memorial Circle and Alabang Town Center and live coverage of millennium midnight celebrations all over Metro Manila, across the Philippines and around the world.


On July 14, 2008 airs the 2008 Miss Universe pageant, was held at the Crown Convention Center in the Diamond Bay Resort, Nha Trang, Vietnam. This is also the first time that the Miss Universe pageant was broadcast in 1080i High-definition. This pageant was held in a contemporary Communist state for the first time as well.

These games were the first to be produced and broadcast entirely in high definition television. The Philippine broadcaster is PTV and other broadcasting stations in Philippines with other languages which are broadcasting all competitions, events, galas and ceremonies with the Paralympics. The first ever longest continuous HD coverage of the Beijing 2008 Olympics 16 days from 8-24 August 2008.

On February 2, 2009, a new ident was produced, it used some similar types of ribbons but this time they were are joined forming the TVB logo at the end. The sound was the same to the 2006 one but at the end they shortened the sound effect. The Station ID theme was "Always Be There" by Freeplay Music.

On July 11, 2009, the UAAP Season 72 was opened at the Araneta Coliseum, The opening ceremonies and the opening day doubleheader of the UAAP were the first programs in the Philippines to be broadcast in 1920 × 1080 (2.1 megapixels) 16:9 digital high definition, although only digital TV viewers with HD boxes were able to watch them.

On May 10, 2010, Augmented reality was first used for the 2010 Automated National Elections. The AR will be used to show the real-time breakdown of votes for each candidate and to air election reports by ABS-CBN correspondents from across the archipelago. On the other hand, the 103" touchscreen monitor will be used to show updates from social media like Facebook and Twitter and reports from Bayan Mo, i-Patrol Mo Boto Patrollers. The coverage last from 4:00 a.m. of May 10, 2010 to 5:00 a.m. of May 12, 2010.

On May 30, 2012, the satellite and terrestrial horizontal resolution was increased to 1920 horizontal and 1080 vertical pixels.

On July 1, 2012, a new ident was produced. The starting part of the background color is green and white, and there are several ribbons (with colors of green, blue, and purple) whirling to form a three-color (blue, green and red) sphere. While forming a sphere, the green part (from the background color) will soon turn to purple, and after forming a sphere, the background would be a bi-color (from left to right), purple and green. After changing the background color, the TVB logo appeared with the early 1990s style ("Spinning Logo" ident). The melody is the same as the last one, but the tone and the sound effect have changed.

On March 1, 2013, the ident has made some changes. The background color turns into white, and the colors of ribbons change to orange, blue, and purple.

Programme

For the first few years after its inception, the channel only aired educational and informative programs with news being one of the biggest draws. Once the national feed started in 1982, the channel started airing regional and local shows on time-sharing basis. For most Indian states, this meant one national and one local news telecast.
