Fresh from winning three gold medals enroute to smashing two UAAP records, UP swimmer Kendrick Lim Uy said yesterday he’s working double time to improve his clocking in the 50-meter freestyle for the chance to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.
“Representing the Philippines in the Olympics is my ultimate goal,” said the six-foot, 170-pound Lim Uy. “Right now, I’m just 0.3 of a second away from the qualifying mark of 23.3 seconds. It’s a realistic goal but first, I hope to win medals in the coming Southeast Asian (SEA) and Asian Games.”
Lim Uy, 20, clocked 23.67 to win the UAAP gold in the 50-meter freestyle at the Trace College pool in Los Baños last week. He broke his own UAAP record of 24.4 set two years ago but fell short of Daniel Coakley’s national mark of 22.8. Lim Uy also won golds in the 100-meter freestyle (new UAAP record of 52.3) and the 4x100 medley relay. His haul included three silvers in the 200-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter backstroke. In all, he swam 15 races in seven events in four days.
Lim Uy is the only national swimmer who lives, trains and studies in Manila. The others, like Miguel Molina, are based in the US.
“We’re definitely progressing as a team,” said Lim Uy, a third year UP student of sports science. “We’ve got a lot of young and promising swimmers coming up. Three of our Olympians——Daniel, Ryan Arabejo and Christel Simms——are all teenagers. Hopefully, we can continue to dominate the SEA Games then win some medals at the Asian Games.”
Lim Uy said the team still needs Molina who at 24, is the country’s most senior swimmer. Molina bagged three gold medals in last year’s SEA Games in Thailand.
