Passenger Rush
BATANGAS CITY — This weekend, the port of Batangas expects a passenger rush of about 25,000 daily for the Yuletide holidays or an increase of at least 400 percent in passengers. The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said that since last weekend, passengers boarding for Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro and Romblon increased. Next weekend, more passengers are expected as Calapan City celebrates is annual fiesta on New Year’s Day. Batangas, the second busiest passenger port next to Manila, records 120 ship departures daily, including roll-on roll-off vessels. In 2012, the port recorded a total of 6,257,483 passengers passing through the alternate international in this city and from its allied ports in Batangas. PPA-Batangas chief, Leopoldo C. Biscocho, Jr. said the port is ready with all passenger assistance and security measures. (Vicky A. Florendo)
Firecracker Ban
TAGAYTAY CITY, Cavite — City officials here reminded anew its citizens about the firecracker ban in this prime tourist destination. Mayor Agnes Delgado-Tolentino renewed the call to ensure the safety and protection of residents and the visiting local and foreign tourists and keep the city smoke and noise-free. The firecracker ban has been in existence in the city for the last 11 years. It is being implemented strictly by authorities after the city government approved the anti-firecracker ordinance in 2002. The administration and the Sangguniang Panglungsod (city council) cited the dangers posed by firecrackers and its smoke and noise, as well as expenses spent, as reasons for the ban. (Anthony Giron)
