Mike Enriquez and Saksi memories

Saksi was the longest-running news program aired on primetime since October 2, 1995 on GMA Channel 7.

Theme: "Energy" by Craig Palmer

The newscast is anchored by Mike Enriquez and Karen Davila from October 2, 1995 to May 17, 1996, Mike Enriquez, Karen Davila and Mel Tiangco from May 20, 1996 to May 29, 1998 and Jay Sonza, Luchi Cruz-Valdes and Mel Tiangco from June 1, 1998 to July 30, 1999. It is aired from Mondays to Fridays at 5:45 to 6:00pm (October 2, 1995 - June 28, 1996), 5:30 to 6:00pm (July 1, 1996 - May 28, 1998) and 6:00 to 6:30pm (June 1, 1998 - July 30, 1999) and simulcasted on DZBB Radyo Bisig-Bayan 594.

On October 2, 1995, GMA Network launched Saksi in Filipino from the Eyewitness News branding by WABC-TV in New York, originally entitled Saksi: GMA Headline Balita, as a 15-minute early evening weekday newscast. It was then anchored by Mike Enriquez (then known as "Mr. Saksi") and Karen Davila. Saksi became popular in such a short time, that people were using the word as a catchphrase, complete with the pointed forefinger like the program's news anchors. In the early years of the newscast, the anchors, especially Enriquez, popularized the word "pasok" (come in) in introducing reporters (who included Jessica Soho, Arnold Clavio, Mao dela Cruz and Susan Enriquez, among others). This style of introducing reporters was also previously used in GMA's other regional news programs patterned after "Saksi" like: Balitang Ilokano (Laoag), Balitang Cagayan Valley (Santiago, Isabela), Balitang Northern Luzon (Baguio), Balitang Amianan (Dagupan), Balitang Katagalugan (Batangas), Balitang Palawan (Palawan), Baretang Bikol (Naga), Balitang Bisdak (Cebu), Testigo (Davao), Testigo Socsksargen (General Santos), Testigo Central Mindanao (Cotabato), Testigo Northern Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro), Testigo Caraga (Butuan), Testigo Chavacano (Zamboanga) and Ratsada (Iloilo).

On May 20, 1996, Mel Tiangco joined Enriquez and Davila, after the former's transfer from ABS-CBN when she suspended from doing a TV commercial. Economist Solita "Winnie" Monsod also joined the newscast with her own opinion segment, "Mareng Winnie" (which became a moniker by which she has been since known for). Other special segments, such as Huling Hirit (light human-interest stories to cap the newscast, reported by Kara David) and S na S (Showbiz sa Saksi) (a showbiz segment with Lyn Ching then she anchored with Enriquez, Davila and Tiangco) were also added to the news program, as its set was reformatted & running time was expanded to 30 minutes.

On June 1, 1998, Saksi reformatted its studio set, & graphics, but the logo has the same design. Partners Mel and Jay & Tapatan host Jay Sonza replaced Enriquez while he appointed as an anchor of GMA Network News with Vicky Morales who and the news team switched to Taglish then Filipino. Davila, on the other hand, became a co-host of Extra-Extra, a magazine program featuring different human-interest and entertainment stories (which also served as pre-programming to Saksi). Monsod left the newscast to host GMA's new public affairs program "Debate". The "Mareng Winnie" segment was replaced as "Pulso ng Mamamayan" (Pulse of the People), the segment features some filipino citizen say upon the pass events. Mel Tiangco, Sonza's co-host on Partners Mel and Jay, then joined the newscast as co-anchor, thus Saksi and Partners Mel and Jay are the news programs exclusive to them. When GMA Network News transfers from English to Filipino Language, Saksi reformatted, the original subtitle, GMA Headline Balita, was dropped out in late 1998.

On August 2, 1999, Saksi began to transfer its studio at the newly-bulit GMA Network Center. Tiangco (who was appointed as anchor of Frontpage: Ulat ni Mel Tiangco, which replaced GMA Network News on the late-night slot but the newscasts continuously on weekends until 2002.) and Sonza left the newscast, & returning GNN anchor Mike Enriquez with Vicky Morales. Enriquez & Morales were final anchors with him on the weekday edition of GMA Network News in their partnership. In the year 2000, Davila, now moved to ABS-CBN. The show won its first international awards the "Asian TV Awards". The show reformatted its logo & set, twice.

On July 15, 2002, Saksi exchanged timeslots with Frontpage in order for the latter show to compete with ABS-CBN's TV Patrol (which was, incidentally, the newscast that Tiangco came from before transferring to GMA). The shift to late-night also prompted the start of "Side Trip", a human-interest segment hosted by Howie Severino.  In the same year, Saksi won the Gold Medal for Best Newscast in the New York Festival, becoming one of the few news programs outside the United States to receive the said honor. The award (With the Peabody Award that the network won in 2000) was later recognized by the Philippine Congress by issuing the network a commendation for its work in News and Public Affairs in 2003. Around March 2003, Enriquez went to Baghdad, Iraq to cover the Iraq War, this was Saksi's first live coverage outside the country.

By June 30, 2003, Saksi reformatted & began to share studios with Frontpage. Enriquez left again to the newscast on March 12, 2004 to rejoin Tiangco on their new early evening newscast, 24 Oras.

who would've thought that the original "Saksi"--that snappy 15-minute newscast as we first knew it--would, among other things, make a household name out of TV "late-bloomer" Mike Enriquez (who by then already had some 20 years or so of radio experience under his belt before he crossed over to TV)?

TAPE bossman Tony Tuviera, if i remember right, was the first director of "saksi"...incidentally, at the time the newscast went on the air (October 1995), TAPE-produced programs "Eat, Bulaga!" and "Valiente" had just been on GMA for about 10 months..."Mr. T" would also serve as creative consultant for another GMA news-produced program, "Brigada Siete" (which EB Host Tito Sotto started hosting after louie beltran died)...

if there's one thing that i wished the original "Saksi" didn't start doing, though? 'yun 'yung pagpapatugtog ng theme music ng newscast in the background during almost the entire show--kahit habang may binabasang istorya o may naka-play na pre-recorded report. that became a practice that GMA news still continues to do even in the present iteration of "Saksi" (and with its other newscasts)...even ABS also started doing that same practice on "TV patrol"...

some TV news memories, randomly:

- not too long before former actress precious hipolito(-castelo) joined IBC news, the network had two more movie stars in their on-cam team: snooky serna (who was credited there by her full married name: snooky serna-go [go being the real-life last name of ex-hubby ricardo cepeda]) and current pagsanjan, laguna mayor e.r. ejercito a.k.a. george estregan, jr. (he used the latter name during his IBC stint)...serna would also host another IBC show called "Travel and Trade", while Ejercito would eventually jump into the political bandwagon (it runs in the family nga naman).

- ABS-CBN's Bernadette Sembrano and TV5's Amelyn Veloso actually started their TV careers as co-anchors in an IBC newscast called "CTN Midnite"...i don't know what the heck "CTN" meant, but, as shown by the second word in the title, the newscast was aired at the ungodly 12:00mn timeslot, right after the VTV block (and therefore, later than all the other late-night newscasts at that time). kasama rin nila doon as third anchor si alice noel (who would later leave IBC for ABS-CBN/ANC).

- professor randy david also tried his hand briefly at being a news anchor--siya 'yung kauna-unahang anchor ng "balitang-balita" on ABC (when the network came back on the air in 1992), alongside chichi fajardo(-robles). it was on ABC where his "public forum" talk show (from IBC) was revived (but it would later move to GMA as "public life"). prof. david would later be succeeded by TG Kintanar on the said ABC newscast.

- three personalities closely-identified with sports and/or sports TV who briefly did some time as news anchors but never continued it after: noli eala (IBC, "Express Balita" and "Balita Ngayon" [the latter was a short-lived late-night newscast...pinalitan ito ng "news tonight"]), chino trinidad (NBN, "teledyaryo"--he and gani oro were the original anchors when the newscast began airing as a two-hour primetime show) and chot reyes (NBN, "teledyaryo"--he became chino's co-anchor whenever gani oro wasn't around).
