DOTC expects P1B savings from building LRT-MRT common station near TriNoMa

MANILA - The government stands to save a billion pesos if it builds the common station for Metro Manila's two overhead train services near TriNoMa mall, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

During the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Harbor Link Segment 10.1 Project, Transport Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya told reporters that the government is expecting P1 billion in savings if it drops the original plan of putting up the common station for LRT1 and MRT3 beside the SM City North Edsa Annex.

Ayala Land Inc owns the TriNoMa mall at the corner of Edsa and North Avenue in Quezon City.

"We're just reviewing the technical side where the turn-back system would be installed," Abaya said.

He said the government plans to return the P200 million payment that SM Prime Holdings Inc advanced to state-run Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) for the naming rights of the common station.

On November 21, 2013, Malacanang approved the P1.4 billion construction of the LRT Line 1 North Extension Project – Common Station.

The project involves the provision of a common station for LRT1, MRT3 and eventually MRT7. Head to head platforms for LRT1 and MRT3 with a 147.4-meter elevated walk-a-lator to the proposed MRT7 at North Avenue will be constructed.

LRT1 (North-South Line) runs from Baclaran to Roosevelt in Quezon City, while the MRT3 (EDSA Line) runs from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City.

The planned P62.7 billion MRT7 (North-East Line) involves the construction of a 22.8-kilometer rail system from North Avenue station in Quezon City, passing through Commonwealth Avenue, Regalado Avenue and Quirino Highway up to the proposed Intermodal Transportation Terminal (ITT) in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. This project will cover 14 stations.
