MANILA - Rehabilitation of the country's first overhead train service should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).
The agency last week issued a notice to proceed to OMMC-KORAIL-Erin Marty-Jorgman Joint Venture to replace 23 kilometers of rail of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1) within 20 months from the receipt of the notice.
In November 2012, OMMC-KORAIL-Erin Marty-Jorgman Joint Venture won the bidding for the P269 million LRT1 Rehabilitation Project. The project was supposed to start in May last year, but the Commission on Audit had raised procedural issues, which had since been resolved.
The DOTC also issued a notice to proceed to OMMC-KORAIL-Erin Marty-Jorgman Joint Venture for the P104.76 million Systematic Replacement of Grantry Anchor Bolts of LRT1 Revenue Line.
The agency directed the winning bidder to deliver the items within 36 months from receipt of the notice.
State-run Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) earlier said the rails of LRT1, which has been operating for more than 30 years, are expected to reach a "critical stage of deterioration" after four years.
To slow down its deterioration, LRTA has implemented various measures, including the reduction of train speed and capping the number of passengers per platform.
LRT1 runs from Baclaran in Pasay City to Roosevelt in Quezon City. Passenger traffic reached 171.8 million in 2013 from last year's 170.72 million.
